UPDATE: Sarasota County is leading three major stormwater and resiliency projects within the City of Sarasota, reflecting a strong City–County partnership to address flooding impacts experienced during Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton. The Hudson Bayou and Whitaker Bayou dredging projects were approved by the County Commission on November 18, followed by approval of the St. Armands Key stormwater improvements on December 16.
In summary:
St. Armands Key Stormwater Improvements ($13.5M Resilient SRQ + $478K City match): County-led upgrades to pumps, underground storage, backflow prevention, and power reliability to better manage tidal surge and heavy rainfall along John Ringling Boulevard, a major business corridor and evacuation route.
Hudson Bayou Resiliency Dredging ($13.711M Resilient SRQ + $1.0M City): Removal of accumulated sediment and bank stabilization to restore stormwater conveyance, reduce neighborhood flooding, and improve drainage along Osprey Avenue and Bahia Vista Street including improvement at Ohio Place.
Whitaker Bayou Dredging ($10.012M Resilient SRQ + $9.999M federal funding pending): Restoration of bayou capacity to reduce flooding in North Sarasota neighborhoods and prevent repeated roadway closures along US-301/Myrtle Street.
Together, these County-led projects represent more than $48 million in resiliency investment and will improve system performance, reduce flood duration, and help the community recover more quickly after future storms providing additional resiliency.
We also want to thank everyone who showed up to the County Commission meetings, including CCNA members, neighborhood residents, City Commissioners, and City staff. Your engagement and advocacy played an important role in elevating these issues and demonstrating how critical these investments are to our community.
Thank you,
Nik Patel, Public Works Director, City of Sarasota
