Crime Tip of the Month:    Common Scams against the Elderly

TOP SCAMS

  • Social Security Scams –Key take away: deter scammers by requesting written confirmation of the request and never share your social security number over the phone
  • Telemarketing Scams –Key take away: Never give personal information over the phone, through the mail or the internet unless you have initiated the contact, or you are sure you know who you are dealing with
  • Investment Scams –Key take away: Always verify investment opportunities through financial professionals and regulatory agencies before community money.
  • Romance Scams –Key take away: Be skeptical of online strangers and verify their identity before continuing any communication. Never send money to someone you haven’t met in person.
  • Contract and home repair scams -Key take away : Always verify contractors to ensure they are licensed before agreeing to any work and don’t rush making decisions. Take your time to verify the legitimacy of any offer or request
  • Tax Refund Identity Theft -Key Take away: Don’t give a business your social security numbejust because they ask. Give it only when required. Additionally, leave your social security card at home instead of carrying it in your wallet.
  • Donation Scam –Key take away: Don’t rely on an unknown caller’s word alone research a charity before denoting.
  • Computer and Technology Scams-Key take away: Always be suspicious of unsolicited communication, especially one that asks for personal information. Never click on suspicious links or attachments.
