What does our state and community do to mitigate wildfires in natural areas and decrease risk to our communities?  What can we do in our own neighborhoods to protect our homes and properties from the risk of wildfire?

Florida understands and endorses land management burns which keep our community safe and enhances restoration of endangered species such as the Florida Scrub – Jay and Gopher Tortoises!

Centennial neighborhoods abound with charm and beauty. Grandfathered ordinances, small lot sizes, grand trees can put our neighborhoods at risk. How can we advocate the continuation of old world charm but modernize fire safety standards for the 21st century?

Our speakers and topics include:  Dr. Katherine Clements, ecology and natural resources educator, UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County; Tony Clements, Division Manager, Natural Areas and Trails, Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources; and Matt Brady, Wildland Fire Mitigation Officer, Sarasota County Fire Department will present on the history of fire in the Southeast and Florida, Sarasota County’s prescribed fire program, and the importance of prescribed fire to restore wildlife habitat, keep ecosystems healthy, and decrease risk of wildfires that can impact our communities.

Karen Pariser, Master Gardener Volunteer/Educator, SPPNA Complete Streets Chairwoman and Stroll Yards Contributor will discuss Firescaping your yard as an essential part of protecting your home. Which works best in the fire environment: Ground covers, mulch and turf; Florida Friendly and native plants which are less flammable; plants to avoid and simple tips to make your home accessible for our fire-fighters. What are the present fire ordinances in the City of Sarasota? Are our neighborhoods meeting these standards?
